The Bloomfield property in Halifax's north end is going to the Nova Scotia Housing Development Corp., despite the concerns of several councillors.
In a 10-6 vote Tuesday, council agreed to a staff recommendation to let the housing agency buy and redevelop the site between Agricola and Robie streets.
The municipality put out a request for proposals in June. Planners evaluated three of the eight responders. The housing development corporation received the highest marks.
The corporation said it would restore the historic buildings and make sure that 40 per cent of the 478 units were designated as affordable housing. It also promised to follow the highest environmental standards for construction.
Tuesday's approval came after several councillors said they were concerned that the housing corporation did not meet the vision for the community.
However, staff told council those concerns could be addressed in the development agreement.
