The work of the Nova Scotia legislature came to a sudden halt Monday night when MLA Jim Boudreau fell ill during a speech by the minister of economic development.

A police officer outside the chamber called 911 as two politicians – who were also paramedics – helped out.

"One of our members was feeling quite ill," said Dave Wilson, the minister of health. "So I just lent a hand with a fellow paramedic," he said of Chuck Porter.

The ambulance quickly arrived. Boudreau was alert as he was taken to hospital.

The Premier's office said he was admitted overnight for observation as a precaution.

There was no word on the cause of Boudreau's illness Monday night.

Boudreau represents Guysborough-Sheet Harbour.
