Cape Breton Regional Council has unanimously endorsed Mayor Cecil Clarke's plan for the area.

Councillors asked a few questions about specific items in the four-year strategy, but mostly heaped praise on it in a 90-minute session.

"You're showing tremendous leadership here and I think you are ready to walk the walk," Councillor Lowell Cormier said to the new mayor.

But Councillor Claire Dethridge questioned his "worst-first" standard for funding road and sidewalk improvements.

"Our budget is meagre enough, but I don't want to see it all spent in one area at any given time. Whatever we have has to be shared around," she said.

Councillor Eldon MacDonald also questioned Clarke's plan to create a new policy advisor position. MacDonald wondered how the position would be filled and if it would follow hiring policy.

Clarke said it would be an appointment and the contract would be tied to his own tenure as mayor. The person would help him communicate with provincial and federal governments, and also with businesses.

Clarke also plans to hire communication staff.

The mayor did not provide the cost of any of his plans, but the money must come from the municipality's $136 million budget.
