A LifeFlight helicopter was dispatched to Cape Breton where a man suffered serious injuries after being struck by a falling tree.

Emergency and rescue personnel extracted the injured man from the woods in the Leitches Creek area.

Cape Breton Regional Police responded to a reported workplace accident on Barrachois Mountain, where a 46-year-old man was injured when a tree fell on him. The man was brought to Halifax for treatment.

North Sydney Fire Services was also on scene to assist with removing the man from the woods.

Police closed a section of the highway near Grand Narrows to allow for the landing and departure of the air ambulance.

They were advising motorists to expect traffic delays and take an alternate route if possible.

Police say the Nova Scotia Department of Labour was also on the scene investigating.
