Two people are being treated for smoke inhalation following an equipment malfunction on board a ship at the Irving-owned Halifax Shipyard Saturday afternoon, says a spokeswoman for Irving.

Mary Keith confirmed a piece of equipment malfunctioned when the Marine Atlantic vessel Vision was in the process of dry-docking, causing a fire and smoke.

Halifax Fire crews arrived at the scene after 3 p.m.

The two individuals were taken to hospital by ambulance. Keith said they weren't incapacitated.

There is no word yet on the extent of the injuries or what caused the incident.

Keith said Saturday's accident shouldn't have any effect on completing the contract on the ship.

She said the province's labour board will be notified.
