Some Nova Scotia seniors are getting some much needed financial help, thanks to a new website started in Ontario.

The idea behind Seniors in Need is to deliver assistance, from person to person, one donation at a time.

Those in need can post their stories, anonymously, on the website. Then their needs are matched to donations.

"You know they were isolated, they had needs they couldn't afford and I thought, well this is pretty bad, especially in a country like ours, and we should be able to help them out somehow," said the site's founder Peter Cook.

So far, there are only two listings from this province, both submitted by the Victorian Order of Nurses in the Halifax area.

The anonymous couples are asking for donations to help cover the costs of transport.

"This is a wife; she is a primary caregiver for her husband who is living with cancer and dementia. She's accompanying him to all of his medical appointments. They live in a living in a rural area, so coming to an appointment at the QE2 in downtown Halifax is potentially costing them $20 a ride," said Fallon Bourgeois with the Victorian Order of Nurses.

She said many impoverished seniors have trouble paying even for subsidized services.

"We see clients who can't pay their frozen favourites meals. A meal is $6 each and they aren't able to afford that," she said.

So far, the site has helped one senior in Nova Scotia.

"One client has received $200, and from my conversations with her she's been very grateful for the donations she's received. She's relieved, because that means $200 she doesn't have to spend on an already-tight budget," Bourgeois said.

The money goes straight to seniors so donators don't get any charitable receipts, but Seniors in Need said it doesn't collect any personal information.
