NSP union avoids strike, reaches tentative agreement

Unionized workers at Nova Scotia Power have reached a tentative deal and avoided a strike.
The utility said a government-appointed conciliator helped it reach a tentative deal with its union very early on Tuesday.
One thousand linesmen, trades and plant workers were set to strike Saturday morning.
In a release, Jeff Richardson, business manager and financial secretary for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1928, said the union will be holding meetings across the province to present the tentative agreement to the members.
Ratification votes by those workers must be held on or before Nov. 5.
The union says the tentative agreement would provide a 2.65 per cent wage increase per year over three years beginning Oct. 26.
Members would also pay more into the penion plan, to help the utility cover a $180 million shortfall in the company's pension fund.
