A 17-year-old was found guilty of manslaughter Friday afternoon in the shooting death of 70-year-old Glenn Oakley in Spryfield last November.

The teenager was accused of first-degree murder but was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Crown prosecutor Ron Lacey spoke to the press after the decision was rendered in youth court.

"The evidence wasn't there with respect to first-degree, where an individual caused the death of a person," said Lacey. "Without that specific intent to kill, that is manslaughter."

The teenager's name is shielded by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He was also found guilty of theft, possession of stolen property, possession of a weapon and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Lacey said the prosecution has already applied to have the young offender sentenced as an adult. The youth's next court appearance is Nov. 19.

An 18-year-old is also charged in the case. Jerricho Upshaw's second-degree murder case is still before the courts.

Christopher Picco, 19, is charged as an accessory to murder after the fact.
