A community breakfast program for children in Halifax's Mulgrave Park will resume next week after being shut down because of lack of funding, but its future still depends on public donations.

For the first time in eight years, Breakfast on the Go was not operating at the Mulgrave Park Caring and Learning Centre when school started in September.

It will return on Tuesday, but no one knows for how long.

The program serves breakfast and a snack for 60 to 80 children in the area daily. The community is made up of many single parent and immigrant families who live on limited incomes.

Two of Stephanie Faulkner's three children go to school and use the program.

"It's hard to provide a healthy snack for two children going to school on a low income, so it's very important to have in our community," she said.

Faulkner's seven-year-old daughter Catherine thinks so too.

"When I'm having a rough day they tell me, 'I hope you have a better one,'" she said.

"I treat them like they're my own children. I encourage them. I advise them. If they're doing something wrong, I let them know," said Evelina Upshaw, one of the two women who run the breakfast program.

For eight years, the Halifax regional school board financed the breakfast program, but budget cuts forced it to withdraw funding in order to finance school breakfast programs.

It needs $9,000 a year to maintain itself.

They've raised some money and are hoping the community will help provide donations so the program can continue.
