The 34-year-old Mississauga driver of a Porsche that collided with a Chrysler Sunday morning in downtown Halifax has been charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

The three people in the Chrysler suffered injuries.

"There were three occupants in the Chrysler 300, two of them were males in the front seat who were taken to hospital with undetermined injuries and a female who was in the back seat didn't appear to have suffered serious injuries but she actually had to be freed from the vehicle by the fire department's Jaws of Life," said Sgt. Jeff Carr.

Carr said the man fled the scene after the 4:30 a.m. collision at the corner of Argyle and Prince streets. He was arrested a short distance from the scene.

"It was quite a significant crash," he said.

The Mississauga, Ont., man was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on Oct. 31.

Carr said one of the cars slammed into a fence and a light standard was knocked over. He said it's lucky more people weren't hurt due to the location and time of the crash.

"It was at the peak of the bar rush and given the debris field there, it was quite a crash," said Carr.

"There's a car into a fence and there would have been a lot of people around and [it's] very, very fortunate that no bystanders were hurt because there would have been a lot of people on the sidewalks at that time of the morning, leaving the bars."
