A restaurant in downtown Sydney has created candidate-themed sandwiches to get people talking about this October's municipal election.
Flavor, on Pitt Street, has created Cecil and Rankin sandwiches, named for Cecil Clarke and Rankin MacSween, who are both running to be mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
The Cecil is filled with smoked meat. The Rankin is a vegetarian creation.
Scott Morrison the owner of Flavor, said he spoke with both candidates before inventing the sandwiches.
"We got some input on what they would like in their sandwich and how they would like to create it and we went from there," he said.
Nolan Peters, a server at the restaurant, said the sandwiches generate a lot of talk.
"One of them has meat in it and one of them is vegetarian so you have that battle going on too," he said.
The choice of ingredients may be what's drawing people to one sandwich or another.
"I ordered the Cecil Clarke special," said customer Paula Pyke. "Smoked meat, it's a favourite of mine so I went for it."
Pyke said she plans on voting for Clarke as well.
As for Clarke himself, he's confident his sandwich will win the war.
"It's got all the great ingredients that make people who are hungry want to feel like they're satisfied and that's what I hope to do as mayor," he said.
MacSween isn't giving up — he said more people are going to eat his sandwich and vote for him too.
The number of sandwiches sold up until Wednesday didn't back that up though. Fifteen Cecils had sold by that time, compared to seven Rankins.
However, that number was boosted by Clarke himself, who bought six of his own sandwiches for a meeting.
Flavor is currently working with the three newest mayoral candidates to create sandwiches for them.
The results of the sandwich war will be revealed Oct. 19, the day before the election.
