A 25-year-old man from the Halifax area accused of assault with a weapon is due in court Wednesday after a car struck a woman sitting on a bus stop bench Tuesday, say police.
Police in Halifax said a car driving along Portland Street near Baker Drive in Dartmouth swerved, jumped the curb and struck the 25-year-old woman around 4:20 p.m.
The woman was sent to hospital with broken bones on her lower body.
Sgt. Jeff Carr, with the Halifax Regional Police, said the driver got out of the vehicle, before driving away.
"There were several witnesses and one of them actually stepped in front of the vehicle to attempt to keep the driver from fleeing," he said.
Then "allegedly the driver advanced his vehicle towards that person who had to, rather quickly, move out of the way."
Investigators arrested a man about two hours later.
The incident escalated from charges of dangerous driving, to injury of a bystander, to allegations of that the driver turned his car into a weapon.
The man spent the night in jail and will appear in a Dartmouth court Wednesday morning.
The woman has been released from hospital after being treated for her injures.
