A downtown Halifax street has reopened after being closed for hours because of a large sinkhole.
The hole — on Cornwallis Street, close to the Barrington Street intersection — was about two metres by three metres, according to the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Cornwallis Street from Barrington to Brunswick streets was closed to traffic on Tuesday afternoon and was blocked by Halifax Regional Police officers.
Workers arrive to assess and fix the damage. (Craig Paisley/CBC)Crews from the municipality, Halifax Water and Heritage Gas were at the site for repairs.
The sinkhole was about 20 metres from another hole that appeared near the intersection of Barrington, Cornwallis and Upper Water streets last week.
Halifax Water said that hole was caused by a rupture in a sewer pipe underneath the street.
Crews used an undergound camera to examine the damage before filling in the hole.
