Students will have to pack umbrellas and match their back-to-school outfits to their rain boots Wednesday after Environment Canada issued heavy rainfall warnings for parts of northeast Nova Scotia, including Cape Breton.

Environment Canada forecasts project as much as 70 millimetres of rain with Les Suetes winds gusting up to 100 kilometres an hour.

The forecast also predicts a low-pressure system to move over the Maritimes by Thursday evening.

“The rain is expected to be heavy at times with amounts reaching 60 to 70 millimeters with some localized areas up to 100 millimeters by Thursday morning,” according to a weather warning issued by Environment Canada.
