There were two all-terrain vehicle crashes in the Maritimes on Saturday.

The RCMP in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, is investigating after 26-year-old Jason MacPhail died in an ATV crash Saturday afternoon at around 1:30.

He died after his ATV veered off Second Division Road, in the Scotch Hill area, into some trees. The vehicle eventually came to a rest on an embankment.

He was the only person on the ATV. Police said it appears the machine hit some loose gravel on a straight stretch of road.

An autopsy will be conducted in Halifax later this week.

In northern New Brunswick there was a collision between an ATV and a police car early Saturday morning.

RCMP in Charlo, just southeast of Dalhousie, said the ATV was travelling along Route 135. A male driver and a female passenger were thrown from the all-terrain vehicle.

The police car was on patrol at the time. Corporal Pierre Laviolette said the officer was making a u-turn on Route 143 near the Eel River Sandbar when the ATV struck his vehicle.

"The ATV had no lights on. The driver and passenger had no helmets. The passenger in the back had a homemade seat from a lawn chair and they cut the leg, and it was not really secure in the back," Laviolette said.

"That's why the lady passenger in the back was more injured because of the condition of how it was made."

The driver was not hurt. He is facing charges of impaired driving.

The passenger was taken to hospital and later released.

The police officer involved in the crash was not injured.
