RCMP in Cape Breton say a Bedford man who was found on Friday afternoon after falling 150 metres to his death had pitched his tent as close as two metres from the cliff's edge.

Police say they do not suspect foul play in the death of the 64-year-old man in Meat Cove. Const. Brad Anderson says the man appeared to be alone when he fell.

"He was camping there by himself, it appears, and his tent was apparently set quite close to the edge, perhaps as close as two meters from the edge is where his tent was," he said, "As to whether he was walking along the cliffs edge or taking photographs at the cliff edge, that is yet to be determined."

So far police have not found anyone who saw him fall.

"Well I would expect the investigators will speak with some of the other campers there to determine, was the deceased walking along the cliff edge? Had he stopped to take photographs and maybe he lost his footing or his balance? Or did something else happen," said Anderson.

The man's body was discovered by a sightseer who was observing the view from above.

Anderson says a preliminary examination of the body indicates the man may have died the day before he was discovered.

He says autopsy results could be released as early as Monday.
