A Sydney man has been charged with second degree murder in the death of a 35-year-old man from North Sydney Friday night.
Charles Jack Wheeliker, 45, was arrested shortly after the incident occurred. He was charged Saturday night.
Police arrived at the apartment on Townsend Street in Sydney just before midnight. Inside, paramedics attempted to revive the victim but were unsuccessful.
Investigators told CBC News they immediately had suspicions about the circumstances of the man's death.
One person living in the apartment was arrested at the scene and held for questioning, according to Staff Sgt Mike Kennedy of the Cape Breton Regional Police.
"On Saturday, major crime members interviewed several people who were living in the apartment building and nearby a couple of search warrants were also executed," Kennedy said. "Last night the person who was arrested in the apartment, who was first the person of interest, was charged last night with second degree murder."
An autopsy was scheduled in Halifax Sunday.
Wheeliker was taken to the Cape Breton Correctional Centre. He's due in Sydney provincial court Monday.
The five-unit apartment is known to the police, and the incident was not a random act, they say.
The victim and the accused knew each other, according to police.
The name of the victim is being held until next of kin are notified.
