Nova Scotia's Minister of Health and Wellness, David Wilson, is defending the money his department spent on rolling out the government's plan to tackle childhood obesity.

Documents obtained by CBC News under the province's Freedom of Information and Privacy Act show the provincial government spent $155,631 preparing and releasing a strategy called Thrive! in June.

Almost all of the money funded a website, a social media strategy and videos.

Wilson said it's money was well spent

"I think online and social media, we have to do that. So that's why we've brought forward the Thrive! strategy through the methods we have and I think it's a cost effective way to get the message out to those Nova Scotians we want to target," he said.

Liberal MP Andrew Younger said the money the NDP government spent is telling.

"This government is becoming very adept at communications and very adept at spending money on communications and social media and so forth, and still not very good at getting things done," he said.

Wilson said he's confident the strategy for a healthier Nova Scotia will make a difference.

The provincial government spent more than $200,000 on five province-wide plans last spring that ranged from aquaculture to cyberbullying.
