The proposed spot for a gas bar and drive-through. (CBC)Some residents of Fall River, N.S., are concerned about plans for a new gas station located on a lake that provides water for their community.
Residents are worried about the environmental and traffic impacts the gas station could pose, but there's little they can do to stop it.
The Hampton Holding Inc. development, which includes a gas station, convenience store and a coffee shop with a drive-through, is adjacent to the Inn on the Lake bordering Lake Thomas.
Hampton is negotiating with Sobeys to run the gas bar.
According to the Halifax Regional Municipality zoning bylaws the developers are within their rights to build, but Coun. Barry Dalrymple says there are other considerations.
"Yes, they have a legal right to build here. I think they have a moral and professional obligation to come to the community and at least ask what's going on," he said.
Michael Creighton, chair of the Fall River Vision Committee, has spent hours working with the community to create a vision of the community.
"The recurring theme of the Fall River vision is to maintain the rural village feel of Fall River and the proposed edifice in no way fits into that," he said.
The committee's report is just weeks away from being approved and implemented, but the gas station is already in the works.
The developer says he's following all the necessary rules and regulations.
Ralph Hampton says there's no scheduled start date for the project yet.
