A Bridgewater RCMP officer has been charged with various counts of domestic violence after an arrest Tuesday.

Ron MacDonald, director of the province's Serious Incident Response Team, says the allegations include assault, sexual assault and uttering threats between Dec.1, 2010 and Aug. 7, 2012.

MacDonald says an arrest is no different when a police officer is facing charges.

"He was taken into custody as in the usual course of any case where we would have a situation where it was appropriate to arrest and take a person into custody. He wasn't in uniform at the time he was off duty," he said.

Two police agencies, the Bridgewater town police and the RCMP learned of allegations of possible domestic abuse, and called the special investigation unit Tuesday.

The male officer appeared in court Wednesday. He's been held over until Thursday afternoon.
