Search and rescue crews have located a couple who were lost in the woods on the Eastern Shore overnight.

A search team was called in at 9:30 p.m. Monday, to look for 50-year-old Jean Boisjoli and his 48-year-old wife Rosalind in East Chezzetcook. Their daughter called police when they failed to return home from berry-picking. A dog team from the Halifax Regional Police Service helped overnight.

Search-and-rescue teams converged on the area as the first light was breaking through the fog, and managed to locate the couple.

The Boisjolis told the CBC they were picking berries in an area that was very familiar, but managed to lose their bearings around dark. Rather than wander through the woods at night, they stayed the night where they were.

They said they were a little worried about bears and coyotes, but didn't see any wild animals.

At around daybreak, they heard the sound of generators. Later, they heard searchers yelling for them, and they yelled back. The couple made it out of the woods at about 6:30 a.m.

Jean Boisjoli is diabetic, and has Crohn's disease, so he was very weak by the time rescuers found him. Both he and his wife said they were very thankful to the rescue teams that came for them.

"You never think it's going to happen to you, but it can happen to anyone," said Rosalind Boisjoli.
