A ragged road in Lunenburg County is causing damage and distress for local residents, prompting hundreds to sign a petition to repave Forties Road. The road runs between New Ross and East Dalhousie.

Doug Borden, who runs a gas station just beyond the bumpy stretch of road, calls it "the road that time forgot."

"The people who live here, they know about the holes and that, but the people who don't — it's like, during the summer season people traveling, visiting friends, going to cottages — and they come in and say, 'the road is so terrible, it's beating my tires'".

A petition on Borden's counter has dozens of signatures. It calls for Forties Road to be paved this year because it's dangerous and unsafe.

Seventy-three-year-old Beatrice Reeves started the petition in May, she's lived on the road her whole life.

"It's been bad since 2004; I mean, 2004 we were having vehicle problems, I smashed a wheel and a tire, I complained," she said.

Reeves has gathered close to 800 signatures, and sent copies to local politicians and the province. The department of transportation says its a low-volume road that will be repaired, but not repaved any time soon.

MLA Denise Peterson-Rafuse says she plans to take the minister of transportation or the province's chief engineer for a drive on the Forties to convince them that paving should be a priority.
