It took rescue crews more than an hour to free a driver trapped in an overturned tractor trailer in Pictou County this morning.
The trucker was hauling rolls of paper from Northern Pulp to Halifax when his rig overturned on a tight corner of an on-ramp between Highway 106 and Highway 104. RCMP Sgt. Phil Oliver said the man was concious and bleeding inside the crumpled cab.
He says it took two large cranes to lift the cab from the roadway.
"We have two tractor trailers, basically tow vehicles, that have hooked up to the crash vehicle," said Oliver. "They've pulled it in either direction, to lift it, which obviously has its dangers. And it's leaking diesel, so we have the fire department out, at the ready."
Oliver says the driver was taken to the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow for assessment and may be airlfted to Halifax for treatment. He says the man's injuries are not life-threatening.
The on-ramp leading from Highway 106 to the westbound lane on Highway 104 will remain closed for much of the morning until the wreckage is cleared. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
