Artists are being asked to submit a proposal for a sculpture for the Bedford waterfront, similar to "The Wave" on the Halifax waterfront. (Halifax Regional Municipality)The Waterfront Development Corporation (WDC) is looking for an artist to create a piece of public art along the Bedford waterfront.
If all goes well, the sculpture will be ready for viewing this fall.
The Wave is a beloved piece of local art along the Halifax waterfront — people have been climbing on it for 26 years.
More recently, waterfront officials have helped pay for a number of murals on the Dartmouth side of the Halifax harbour.
Now the WDC is looking for a sculpture for a very specific spot along Bedford's waterfront.
"Between the existing provident building at 200 Waterfront Drive and the first new building that's under construction now, it's a cyclindrical structure with a retaining wall and the space inside the structure is two metres in diameter," said Terry Drisdelle, project manager with the WDC.
The developer of two new buildings in the area has agreed to split the $50,000 price tag, Drisdelle said.
Drisdelle said he hopes the sculpture will be ready by the middle of September.
"But if it's a very intriguing piece, that's exactly what we're after. If time is a restriction we could easily extend the deadline for the fabrication and installation through to October or November for that matter," he said.
Interested artists have three weeks to submit their proposals.
