Close to one hundred people showed up to a memorial service in Dartmouth Friday night to pay respects for a man who was killed while crossing the street on Father's Day.

Allen Carpenter, 68, was struck at a busy intersection at Albro Lake Road and Victoria Road Sunday night.

"He couldn't sing, he couldn't play an instrument and he liked to think he could dance but he couldn't dance!" joked his brother-in-law, Dennis Coolen.

While the family paid tribute to Carpenter's memory, others reflected on the way he died.

Carpenter was hit by a left-turning car. The 60-year-old driver was ticketed with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Immediately after Carpenter's death, his family spoke out about the dangers out the intersection. They said the pedestrian light doesn't allow enough time for someone to cross safely.

Jim Smith, the city councillor for the area, attended the service. He said he hears concerns about crosswalk safety all the time.

"I think that we need to review the left turn on green light issue with traffic services," he said. He suggests they use an arrow to indicate left turns, and have pedestrians cross at a different time.

The city is planning a pedestrian safety review of the crosswalk where Carpenter was struck.

In the meantime, Samantha Coolen-Jones, Carpenter's niece, said the family will rally together to cope with their loss.

"I loved him, and he was special to me and my family and my mom's going to be lost without him," she said.
