The mayor of Middleton has had enough of emergency room closures in his town.

Thursday marked the eighth day Soldiers' Memorial Hospital closed its ER, and it is scheduled to close another four days next week.

Mayor Calvin Eddy said over the years, there have been a lot of changes for the worse at the hospital.

"We've lost things like 13 beds at the hospital; our surgery is gone; it used to be a place where the ER was open," he said.

The last few months have brought a slew of closures on top of that.

"On June 19 we had an annual event, the Relay For Life," said Eddy. "It happens all across the province, but here in Middleton it about doubles the population, and the hospital was closed that day. That, I consider to be a very serious thing."

Mayor Eddy has sent a letter to the province asking for help.

" If it's an issue about money, then I think they should be paying the doctors on par with what they'd be paying in other areas, so that's what we've requested," he said.

Tamara Gilley is a spokesperson for the Annapolis Valley Health District. She reveals the reason for the shortage.

" We have been challenged since two full time doctors have reduced their availability for personal reasons," she said. "We've been connecting with physicians across the province to see their availability and whether others can provide coverage."

At this point, it isn't clear when more regular hours will be restored at the hospital.
