A street in downtown Halifax has reverted back to two-way traffic after shop owners complained to the Halifax Regional Municipality about loss of business.

Blowers Street was converted from a two-way street to a one-way street between Grafton and Barrington streets in October.

The traffic flow change didn't sit well with shop owners along the route and they complained to the city about the impact of last fall's decision on their sales.

"I noticed a difference right away. People were saying that it was difficult for them to get here if they were being dropped off," said Cadence Macmichael, who owns Pretty Things Boutique on Blowers Street.

"It was a lot more complicated."

She also said many drivers were confused after Blowers Street was turned into a one-way lane and would drive the wrong way.

Quick change

The city said signs would be switched by Wednesday night and the street markings will be changed as soon as possible.

Last fall's changes unexpectedly impacted the downtown traffic flow, said city spokeswoman Tiffany Chase.

"It was directing all of the traffic flow from Argyle down to Barrington Street and that wasn't the intention of the changes initially," she told CBC News.

Macmichael said it took people several months to get used to the street as a one-way, so she expects drivers to be confused as they adjust to the latest change.
