Halifax's waterfront will be hosting a slew of events this summer— which could take place while the old BioScience Enterprise Centre building comes down.

Waterfront officials say the work shouldn't interfere with the busy tourist season which includes events such as the Halifax Tall Ships Festival 2012, the TD Halifax Jazz Festival and the Beach Volleyball SWATCH Junior World Championships.

A $190-million complex is planned for Queen's Landing. It includes a new hotel, office space, new stores and a refurbished Maritime Museum with a new berth for HMCS Sackville.

Internal demolition is already underway, and that phase of the work has been slow going.

“With buildings of that age, you always have hazardous materials that are involved in the building’s system – it’s the removal of those, so we’re just finishing that process,” said Eric Burchill, director of planning and development with the Waterfront Development Corporation.

“We’ll be moving forward with the scheduling of the building demolition in the coming weeks and months.”

That means demolition of the building itself could take place at the height of Halifax's tourist season.

Safety will come first, Burchill said, but despite the proximity of the demolition site, the boardwalk will stay open and no events will be disrupted.

“We’re used to working on projects on the waterfront during the high season, projects as large as Bishops Landing during the summer months, so we look around today there’s lots of cranes,” Burchill said.

“So it’s something we’re used to dealing with, it’s a challenge, but it’s part of the incremental development of the waterfront."

Construction projects themselves often become an attraction, he said.

It could take years to complete the various phases of the Queen's Landing complex, carried out by Armour Group Ltd.
