N.S. woman barred from owning pets for 10 years

A woman in New Waterford has been barred from owning animals for 10 years after pleading guilty to a charge of animal cruelty.
Frances Lorena MacDonald, 38, was charged in December after SPCA staff visited her home.
The staff found a doghouse with no floor, sitting on a concrete block, the Cape Breton Post reported.
One of the woman's dogs had also given birth to eight puppies, only two of which survived, according to the newspaper.
On Tuesday, MacDonald pleaded guilty to a single charge of causing an animal to be in distress — a charge under the Animal Protection Act.
In addition to being barred from having custody of animals for 10 years, MacDonald is also prohibited from having animals on her property for a decade, said the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service.
She was also ordered to pay $762 in restitution.
