A passenger died suddenly on the Holland America Line's Maasdam on Wednesday. (Wikimedia)Nova Scotia RCMP are investigating the sudden death of a passenger on a cruise ship that was travelling from Charlottetown to Sydney.
The body of an 82-year-old man from San Diego, California was removed from the Maasdam — a ship from the Holland America Line — after it docked in Sydney on Wednesday morning, said Cpl. Ron MacDonald.
"Our investigators went on, conducted the investigation and spoke to the man's wife, the ship's doctor and the other medical personnel," he said.
MacDonald said the 82-year-old man was with his wife in his cabin — travelling overnight from Charlottetown — when he complained of a medical issue.
He died at approximately 5:50 a.m. in the ship's infirmary.
"What we're looking at is probably a medical emergency but of course, things have to be confirmed by an autopsy," MacDonald told CBC News.
"That's what they suspected and that's what we suspect at the moment, with no reason to doubt that one bit."
MacDonald said the man's body was taken to Halifax, where an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.
