People who live near Dartmouth Road in Bedford are speaking out against two proposed condominium buildings.
At a public meeting Thursday night, about 40 people shared their concerns about the development.
Nathan Rogers, an urban planner representing the developer, Genivar, said there's a need for high-density housing in the area.
Genivar is asking for amendments to the Bedford Municipal Planning Strategy to allow the construction of the buildings.
"Not everyone will live in a single-family home their entire life," he said. "In order to provide housing for all walks of life, in all stages of life, we're proposing an option for people in the neighbourhood."
The proposed buildings would be four stories high and include 24 units each. Rogers believes there's a demand because he says only 15 per cent of the housing in the proposed neighbourhood is considered multiple-unit dwelling.
But his arguments didn't convince people who live nearby, like Simon Dubois. He said there are plenty of condos going up in Bedford.
"We could very easily see our backyard as being transformed as being looked onto by 48 apartments looking into our family room," he said. Dubois wants his neighbourhood to be exclusive for single-family homes.
Others argued that the buildings would increase traffic and decrease property values. They're also concerned that the buildings will appear higher than four stories, because the property is on a hill.
