A man is in stable condition after being shot by Truro police during an incident on Thursday morning.

Members of the Truro Police Service were called to an apartment on Lyman Street at approximately 6:30 a.m. regarding a possible home invasion. Three officers went to the scene and someone allegedly fired shots at them.

The police returned fire, hitting one man suspected in connection with the incident. He's been transported to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax in stable condition.

A second male suspect is in custody.

Ross Landry, Nova Scotia's Justice Minister, said it's now up to the Serious Incident Response Team to investigate and report back on the officer-involved shooting.

"What happens now is they gather the facts, assess the operation and determine what direction to go in. When I talk about direction there's a criminal component to it," he told reporters on Thursday.

"There were shots fired so those involved in that will be investigated. The special investigative unit needs to focus on the procedures by the police and their actions so that there's transparency in the process."

The Serious Incident Response Team, which was established last month, is tasked with looking into deaths, sexual assaults and serious injuries involving police.

It can launch an investigation on its own or after getting a request from a member of the public or a referral from a police chief, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Justice Minister. It has an annual budget of about $800,000.

The unit must file a public report on the incident within three months of finishing its investigation.
