Halifax Regional Police have caught a prisoner facing assault and arson charges after he escaped from custody on Wednesday.

The Department of Justice said Thomas Arnold Jones, 48, got free at 9:30 a.m. while being transported to Dartmouth provincial court.

That sparked a large manhunt in the neighbourhood.

Const. Brian Palmeter, a spokesman for the Halifax Regional Police, said Jones contacted police himself and officers took him into custody at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Marilyn Drive in Dartmouth.

Jones was to be sentenced on Wednesday on a break and enter charge. He also faces charges of assault, unlawful confinement, arson, uttering threats and breach of conditions.
