Jermaine Carvery's trial for robbery and attempted murder begins Wednesday. (N.S. Department of Justice)A jury trial is scheduled to begin Wednesday in Halifax for a notorious escape artist.
Jermaine Carvery is charged with robbery and attempted murder for an incident in September 2006.
A Direct Cash store on Chebucto Road was robbed at gunpoint.
Ten days have been set aside for the trial and Carvery is represented by Toronto criminal lawyer Kathryn Wells.
Carvery is perhaps best-known for escaping custody in April 2008.
He was being escorted by correctional workers from the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Centre in Burnside to a medical appointment at the Victoria General Hospital.
Carvery somehow managed to slip out of his leg shackles while being transported and ran away from correctional workers when their vehicle got to the hospital.
He was on the lam for months before being recaptured in Niagara Falls, Ont.
Carvery is also the alleged ringleader of a gang that staged high-profile armed robberies in Nova Scotia.
In the space of just a few months in 2004, the TRA Atlantic Cash & Carry in Truro, Chrissy's Trading Post in Hammonds Plains and the Costco store in Bayers Lake Business Park were all robbed.
In the Costco robbery, 42 employees were tied up by masked gunmen who stole a trailer full of cigarettes.
Carvery is scheduled to go to trial in connection with the Costco robbery next year.
