The Membertou First Nation in Sydney, N.S., has secured nearly 40 hectares of land where it will build a new public school for children on the reserve.
The Primary to Grade 9 school is scheduled to be open by September 2013.
"This addition is much needed. Membertou is a small reserve. It is an important addition to our land," said Trevor Bernard, the executive director of Membertou First Nation.
Recently released cabinet orders show that on Feb. 2, the federal cabinet approved the transfer of 38 hectares (95 acres) of land to Membertou by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.
The land, which lies between the reserve and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, was purchased by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada in 2000 as part of a program to increase the size of reserves.
Bernard said the reserve has been constrained by its current boundaries. Land that is not used in the school development will be used to build housing, he said.
