A Halifax-area soccer coach has been charged with several sex-related offences involving a minor, CBC News has learned.

Stan Lowther, 39, has been charged with two counts of sexual interference involving a minor under the age of 16, two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, one count of sexual assault and one count of assault.

According to court documents, the alleged incidents occurred between April 2005 and December 2011.

Lowther, a long-time member of the Halifax County United Soccer Club, is last listed as coaching an under-10 boys team there.

Glen Herbert, the president of the Halifax County United Soccer Club, told CBC News Lowther gave the club notice before Christmas that he was stepping down from his coaching duties for personal reasons.

Herbert said he's confident the charges do not involve the club in any way.

"HCU can assure its membership that this situation and the associated charges are unrelated to our club," Herbert wrote in an email to soccer club members.

"Immediately upon learning of the related police investigation, HCU exercised due diligence in consulting with the Halifax Regional Police to confirm that the investigation did not have any relationship to club activities. HCU also confirmed in writing with Mr. Lowther that he was no longer associated with the club in any coaching capacity."

Lowther has also coached the boys' soccer teams at the Halifax Christian Academy.

Jessica Wilson, the principal of the Halifax Christian Academy, confirmed Lowther was a parent coach of the boys' team last fall.

She said the school will be looking for more details on the charges from the police before deciding how to deal with students and parents.

Lowther is due in court on Feb. 29.
