Charges have been withdrawn against a Port Hastings woman and a Waterville man in connection with the death of an eight-week-old baby boy.

Candace Chetwynd, 21, and Shawn MacIsaac, 26, were initially charged with aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessities of life, but the Crown withdrew those charges in Kentville provincial court earlier this week.

Eight-week-old Ethan Chetwynd was rushed to hospital on Jan. 4, suffering from cardiac arrest. He died in hospital two weeks later.

Candace Chetwynd, the baby's mother, and her fiancé MacIsaac were originally charged on Jan. 13 while Ethan was still in hospital.

The RCMP said the investigation is ongoing.

Several sources have told CBC News the charges were dropped primarily for procedural reasons — the fact that the baby died meant a charge of aggravated assault no longer made sense.

RCMP investigators are waiting for the full results of an autopsy from the medical examiner's office before making a decision on any further charges.
