Nova Scotians should find out in the next few weeks who will be the province's next lieutenant governor.

The Queen's current representative, Mayann Francis, has extended her stay in office to give the federal government more time to find a successor.

Nova Scotia's viceregal representative is paid $130,000 per year and lives in historic Government House on Barrington Street in Halifax.

Among the duties of the lieutenant governor is giving royal assent to bills, reading Speeches from the Throne and hosting lots of functions.

Christopher McCreary, a spokesman with the lieutenant governor's office, said Francis's successor should be named within the next month.

"It'll happen when there's an announcement. So, the Prime Minister's Office will announce who the new lieutenant governor is," he said. "And then, within three weeks of that, there should be an installation of the new lieutenant governor."

Francis hit the five-year mark in office in September, and agreed to stay on until the end of January.

But, it's not uncommon for a lieutenant governor to stay on for a few months until a new representative is named.

Since 1867, there have been 30 Nova Scotia lieutenant governors.
