Two teenagers face charges of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of 70-year-old Glenn Oakley in Spryfield.

Oakley was found injured on a sidewalk on Drysdale Road on Saturday night, while he was out for his usual evening walk. He died soon after.

Police said he was shot and called it a random attack.

Officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on Sunday night. He was in Halifax youth court on Tuesday to face the murder charge, along with charges of theft, possession of stolen property, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and fraudulent use of a credit card.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on Monday afternoon. He also faces charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a firearm, possession of stolen property, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Police also said four people were arrested when the 18-year-old was picked up on Monday. Those four face charges including obstructing police and resisting arrest.

Another18-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, and faces charges of accessory after the fact and possession of stolen property.

Sheila Oakley said her husband Glenn left their home in Spryfield for his usual evening walk just before 7 p.m. on Saturday. She said they only had minor problems in their neighbourhood.

Just hours after the teenagers were charged in her husband's death, Sheila Oakley said forgiveness is the only way for her to move on.

"The first thing I would tell them, 'I forgive you for what you've done, but I'm still angry," she told CBC News.

"I don't have to do it, but it's my right. I forgive them for what they did to me and my family. If I forgive them that'll give me a much better chance to heal."

Glenn Oakley worked at Northwood Manor and retired five years ago. On Tuesday, some former co-workers offered condolences to his wife.

"He was funny. He always had these little remarks and he made everybody laugh. He wouldn't hurt a flea," said Jean Parsons.

"He was a really nice man. It's just sad."

Halifax Regional Police said the gun that is believed to have been used in Oakley's death was found during a search of a building on River Road in Spryfield.

Investigators are not looking for any other suspects.
