Stanley Cup champion and Nova Scotia native Brad Marchand was in Halifax Sunday to help raise money for charity by auctioning off some of his own memorabilia..

Marchand grew up in Dartmouth, and this year the 23-year-old helped the Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup.

On Sunday, he donated some of his childhood possessions to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club for Dartmouth North at a fundraiser at the Boston Pizza in Bayers Lake.

CBC"I grew up in the Dartmouth area, playing different sports, baseball, hockey, even different extracurricular activities in the Dartmouth area, I thought it was a great opportunity for the kids and I wanted to help out."

The auction included a hockey stick that Marchand used to score a goal against the Vancouver Canucks during game four of the Stanley Cup finals.

He also donated a signed poster, hockey socks and a golf putter.

The money raised Sunday is going to help build a new roof for the club.

The rookie player said winning the Stanley Cup in his first year was exciting and it only drove him to keep trying for the prized trophy.

He said being home after such a big year was a great feeling, and helping out in his hometown was the right thing to do.

"At my age and to be in this position, it's a great way to give back if I can use the status to help out in the community," said Marchand.

Robin Gorman, program director at the club, said the auction was a big help for children in the community who rely on their services.

"It's probably about 45 years old, so it's great to be able to concentrate on the kids, be able to do what we can for the kids and their needs."

Seven-year-old Dawson Kelly said it was awesome to meet Marchand. CBCDawson Kelly goes to the Boys and Girls Club every morning before school.

"It's fun, because we do fun stuff," said seven-year-old Kelly.

When asked what he thought of Marchand being there Sunday, Kelly said "awesome" and when asked why, he said "because he signed my hat."

Businesses from the area also donated items for the auction.

The group raised more than $3,000 Sunday, finishing well over their goal of $1,000.

The money will go to the Nova Scotia Home Builders' Association to rebuild the club's roof.
