A 16-year-old girl from Salmon River, N.S., may not be able to go on a trip to Brazil next week because her documentation has been lost by Canada Post.

Ashley Totten had been saving for the $2,000 trip and is scheduled to leave Wednesday to go visit an exchange student she became friends with in Truro this school year.

The package with her documents was sent from the Brazilian consulate in Montreal eight days ago.

They were then sent from Montreal to Nova Scotia via Canada Post priority express.

"It's just hard to believe that this even happened. I guess it's just devastating being this close to the trip and everything, not even being a week away. Everything was going so well and it's just not going to happen anymore, unless it turns up, it's hard to have it all soak in I guess,"

Canada Post has told Ashley's mother, Jennifer Gorman, the package made it to a truck in Truro and was to be delivered to their house.

"It was scanned as being delivered to our house a week ago Friday," said Gorman.

In fact, the package was scanned as delivered one minute after it went onto the truck in Truro.

Truro is about 95 kilometres away from Halifax.

It never arrived, and that's left Gorman incredibly frustrated.

"I'd say on a scale of one to 10, it's about a 21, to know that we have no control over this situation now and she did everything right."

Totten and Gorman have put up flyers in their community and contacted their neighbours to see if the package may have been delivered to the wrong address but they've had no luck.

Totten's flight ticket isn't refundable.

Canada Post officials said they are investigating the missing package.
