The Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa is one of three provincially-owned resorts the minister says needs a cash infusion before the upcoming tourist season. (digbypines.ca)A substantial infusion of cash is urgently needed at three provincially-owned resorts in Nova Scotia ahead of the upcoming tourist season, the economic development minister said Thursday.
Percy Paris said he will soon make a presentation to cabinet on what he thinks should be done to improve the conditions of Digby Pines Golf Resort & Spa, Keltic Lodge Resort & Spa in Cape Breton and Liscombe Lodge Resort & Conference Centre on the Eastern Shore.
"I, as minister, recognize that an investment is required," said Paris.
"I think that this is an urgent matter … summer is coming and we don't want to damage our brand here in the province of Nova Scotia."
Paris said $11 million to $15 million should do the job, but he stopped short of saying whether he would ask cabinet for that amount.
"What I am saying is if we don't do any investment in the signature resorts, we are going to further damage our brand and that's going to have an impact on our future."
Paris said cosmetic updates are needed after more than 10 years of neglect. He said buying things like new televisions, mattresses, curtains and carpets would make the resorts more attractive to potential buyers or investors.
Four companies responded to tenders the province sent out in December asking for ideas to ensure the continued operation of the resorts.
They included Cape Breton Resorts, New Castle Hotels and Resorts, Pacrim Hospitality and United Gulf Developments.
Paris said there was no update on the status of those expressions of interest.
Premier Darrell Dexter said he would wait to see what Paris brings to cabinet before deciding on a course of action.
"We have assets there that have had long-standing benefits to the communities in which they operate," said Dexter. "We think there is an opportunity for them to continue to be a success and the question is how do we get there?"
Paris has previously said that the federal government would not be providing any of the money needed to upgrade the resorts.
