Atlantic Towing Ltd. has been fined $75,000 after its barge went down off Yarmouth two years ago.

The Shovel Master capsized in November 2008 while it was being towed from Saint John to Halifax. Three crew members were airlifted to safety.

Atlantic Towing, an Irving-owned company, pleaded guilty to several safety offences under the Canada Shipping Act.

The barge had expired safety certificates. Even under the old certificates, crew members were not supposed to be on board while the barge was under tow.

While the company argued that a fine of $25,000 was adequate, the Crown pushed for $100,000.

Mary Keith, a company spokeswoman, said Tuesday the "appropriate action has been taken."

The Shovel Master, along with 70,000 litres of fuel, remains at the bottom of the ocean.
