An N.S. writer has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. claiming the 2008 movie Fool's Gold was based on his book Fandango's Gold. (warnerbros.com)

A writer from Chester, N.S., has filed a lawsuit against media giant Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Lou Boudreau claims the 2008 movie Fool's Gold was based on his book Fandango's Gold.

The movie starred Donald Sutherland, Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson and grossed more than $300 million at the box office worldwide.

It took him a long time to get the nerve to do it, but last week Boudreau filed legal papers seeking unspecified damages for copyright infringement.

"A friend of mine here in Chester called me up and congratulated me about my book being made into a movie," said Boudreau.

"I asked him what he was talking about and he suggested I go and look at this movie, which I did and it became evident that there were some uncanny similarities."

Boudreau's legal papers were filed in Halifax and he now has 60 days to serve Warner Bros. in California.

"In my statement of claim it's all laid out there with tables of similarities," Boudreau said. "There's 38 pages in my whole claim. If I didn't think that there was a reason for me to pose the question, then I wouldn't have done this."

Boudreau admitted he's nervous about taking on the media giant.

The company isn't commenting on Boudreau's suit.
