An organization representing Nova Scotia university students has launched a letter-writing campaign to counter any move toward higher tuition fees.

The Alliance of Nova Scotia Student Associations is responding to a report prepared for the premier that recommends tuition fees be deregulated.

The campaign is asking students to tell their provincial representatives that increases are not an option.

ANSSA chairman Rob LeForte says 69 per cent of Nova Scotia students graduate with an average of $31,900 in debt.

The organization says students recognize the fiscal realities the province is facing, but ending the tuition freeze will effectively turn part of the provincial debt into student debt.

The alliance represents more than 35,000 students at Cape Breton, Dalhousie, Saint Mary's, Acadia and St. Francis Xavier universities.
