The Crown corporation that provides the ferry service linking southern Newfoundland with Nova Scotia has cancelled some weekend crossings because of Hurricane Earl.

Marine Atlantic is suspending crossings from Cape Breton on Saturday, until at least 8 p.m. AT.

Departures from Newfoundland ports will be cancelled until midnight Saturday night.

Although it has been losing strength, Earl is expected to bring high winds and unsettled conditions to the Gulf of St. Lawrence this weekend.

Marine Atlantic, which had already stopped taking new reservations for sailings on Saturday and Sunday, said Friday it is trying to accommodate passengers on other crossings.

Four counties in Nova Scotia have already been put on hurricane watch.
