The Nova Scotia SPCA says two dogs were left inside scorching-hot vehicles Thursday, and one owner may be charged.

The animal protection group said the dogs were found in separate vehicles parked outside the Superstore on Joseph Howe Drive in Halifax.

Temperatures soared to 33.1 degrees at Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Thursday afternoon, making it the hottest Sept. 2 on record. With the humidity it felt like 41.

The SPCA said one animal was found near death inside a vehicle that was 53 degrees.

The group said both dogs — a long-haired Daschund and a collie-shepherd mix — have recovered.

The SPCA said pet owners should leave animals at home and ensure they have shade and water.
