Nova Scotia's largest union has accepted a new contract with the province.

The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, which represents about 7,700 members of the civil service, voted 65 per cent in favour of the agreement, the union said Wednesday.

About 3,200 votes were cast.

It includes a one per cent pay increase in each of the next two years. The union said the agreement enhances job security, along with health and safety.

The agreement is retroactive to April 1 and expires March 31, 2012.

The union represents civil servants in areas such as natural resources, transportation, food and inspection services, social services, and the courts.
