At least one hungry bear is roaming a neighbourhood in the Halifax area, and residents are worried.

Many people in Fall River have been complaining to the provincial Department of Natural Resources about bear sightings over the past few weeks.

They want the department to step in and do something, especially since many children are out playing on summer evenings, when bears like to make an appearance.

"I think with the frequency of the bears, it is becoming a concern, especially for the kids," resident Randy Doucette said.

A department spokesperson said the department has no plans to set a bear trap in Fall River, a suburban Halifax community of about 4,000 people, because not enough people have filed written complaints.

A large bruin was caught on camera Thursday night having a snack from a resident's compost bin.

Resident Claude Garry said he hasn't seen a bear yet.

"Well, there's been a couple of people talking about seeing bears or a few sightings," he said. "I haven't seen one, but a few of the neighbours have seen him for sure."

Resident Holly Ferrell said people have to be smarter about keeping their garbage away from animals.

"Really, it's people disregarding the advice from the DNR about putting out garbage," she said.

"A lot of people still put out their garbage out the night before [pickup], or two days before. People are going away, they put it out, and, obviously, the bears are attracted to that."
