Flames shoot out the top of the Life Sciences Building Saturday night. (courtesy Stephanie Pelley)One building is closed and two others partly closed after a weekend fire at Dalhousie University in Halifax.
University spokesman Charles Crosby said the top floor of the Life Sciences Centre and the basement of the Chase Building are off limits because they're damaged.
He said the entire Chemistry building is also closed.
"For everything else, the sprinkler systems are now operational and folks can use [the buildings] as they normally would," he told CBC News on Monday.
Firefighters were called to the Life Sciences Centre on Oxford Street at about 11 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses reported flames and dark smoke coming from the top of the building.
The damage from the fire was isolated to the top floor, but the sprinkler system went off and soaked all eight floors.
A water line broke in the tunnel connecting the Chase Building. That building, as well as the Macdonald and Chemistry buildings, had to be closed because the sprinkler system wasn't working.
Most areas were reopened on Monday morning.
Crosby said the fire department has completed its investigation. He said he hopes the cause of the fire will be announced soon.
